What kind of RV do you have?

RV insurance covers a wide range of recreational vehicles, and the type you own shapes the policy you need. We can quote coverage for:

  • Motorhomes (Class A, Class B camper vans, and Class C)
  • Travel trailers
  • Fifth wheels
  • Truck campers and slide-in campers
  • Pop-up and folding camping trailers
  • Toy haulers

If you tow it or drive it to camp in it, there’s almost certainly a policy for it. Not sure where yours fits? Just ask.

The split that trips most RV owners up: motorized vs. towable

This is the most important thing to understand before you buy, because it changes what’s required and what’s optional.

Motorized RVs (you drive them)

A motorhome is a motor vehicle, so in Colorado it must be registered and insured with at least the state minimum liability coverage, the same as a car. According to the Colorado Division of Insurance, that minimum is 25/50/15: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $15,000 for property damage. From there you can add collision, comprehensive, and RV-specific protections.

Towable RVs (you pull them)

Travel trailers and fifth wheels are a different story. Your tow vehicle’s auto liability generally extends to the trailer while it’s hitched and moving, so a towable usually doesn’t need its own separate liability to be on the road. What that auto policy does not cover is physical damage to the trailer itself, your belongings inside it, or liability once the trailer is parked and set up at a campsite.

Good to Know: Exact coverages, limits, and exclusions vary by policy and carrier. Bird Family Insurance can walk you through what a specific policy includes before you buy.

What RV insurance covers

At a glance: RV policies blend auto and home coverage: liability and physical damage on the vehicle side, plus protection for your belongings, campsite liability, and specialized roadside help. Options vary by policy and carrier.

Most RV policies are built from a familiar set of coverages, with a few extras unique to RV life.

Liability

Helps with the costs if you’re responsible for injuring someone or damaging their property with a motorized RV, up to your policy limits.

Collision and comprehensive

Collision helps pay to repair or replace your RV after an accident. Comprehensive covers non-collision losses such as theft, fire, hail, and falling branches, the kinds of things that happen whether you’re driving or parked.

Personal effects & accessories

Your gear inside the RV, along with attached features like awnings and satellite equipment, can be covered up to set limits. This is the “home” side of an RV policy that auto coverage doesn’t provide.

RV-specific add-ons

Depending on the carrier, you may be able to add total loss replacement or agreed value on a newer RV, full-timer liability if you live in it, emergency expense coverage if your RV is disabled far from home, and roadside assistance with towing built for a vehicle that size.

If you live in your RV full time

Full-time RVers need more than vacation coverage. Because the RV is your primary residence, a full-timer’s policy adds home-style liability and personal property protection similar to what a homeowners policy provides, on top of the vehicle coverage. If you’re on the road most of the year, tell us, and we’ll make sure your policy reflects it.

Built for Colorado roads

Colorado is RV country, and it asks a lot of a rig: mountain passes, sudden hail, and long hauls between campgrounds. That makes a few coverages worth a closer look, including comprehensive for hail, emergency expense for breakdowns far from home, and roadside assistance that can actually tow an RV rather than a car. We’ll factor in how and where you travel when we put your options together.

Frequently Asked Questions About RV Insurance in Western Colorado

Is RV insurance required in Colorado?

For a motorized RV, yes. A motorhome is a motor vehicle, so Colorado requires at least the state minimum liability coverage of 25/50/15. A towable like a travel trailer doesn’t usually need its own liability to be on the road, since your tow vehicle’s policy extends to it while moving, but physical damage coverage is still wise and lenders typically require it on a financed unit.

What types of RVs can you insure?

A full range, including Class A, B, and C motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, truck campers, pop-up campers, and toy haulers. If you’re not sure how yours is classified, we can sort that out when we quote it.

Does my auto policy already cover my travel trailer?

Only partly. Your auto liability generally extends to the trailer while it’s hitched and being towed, but it doesn’t cover damage to the trailer itself, your belongings inside, or liability at the campsite. A dedicated trailer policy fills those gaps.

What is full-timer coverage?

It’s coverage for people who live in their RV as a primary residence. It adds home-style liability and personal property protection on top of the vehicle coverage, similar to a homeowners policy. If you’re a full-time RVer, it’s usually the right setup.

Can you cover an older RV or my belongings inside it?

Yes. Older RVs can be insured, often with options suited to their value, and personal effects coverage can protect the gear you keep inside up to set limits. We’ll show you what your RV qualifies for.
