Is motorcycle insurance required in Colorado?
Yes. A motorcycle is a motor vehicle, so Colorado requires you to carry liability insurance on it, the same as a car. According to the Colorado Division of Insurance, the state minimum is 25/50/15: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $15,000 for property damage.
That minimum keeps you legal, but it only pays for damage you cause to others. It does nothing for your own bike or your own injuries, which is why most riders add more.
Key point: Liability is the legal floor, not full protection. To cover your own motorcycle and yourself, you’ll want to look at collision, comprehensive, and medical payments coverage on top of it.
What motorcycle insurance covers
At a glance: A motorcycle policy can cover your liability to others, damage to your bike, your medical bills, custom parts, and your gear. Coverages and limits vary by policy and carrier.
Liability
Helps pay for injuries or property damage you cause to others in an accident, up to your policy limits. This is the required part of your policy.
Collision and comprehensive
Collision helps repair or replace your bike after a crash. Comprehensive covers non-collision losses like theft, fire, vandalism, and hail, which matters for a vehicle that spends time parked outside.
Medical payments
Medical payments coverage helps with your own injury costs after an accident regardless of fault. Riders are more exposed than drivers, so this is coverage worth taking seriously rather than skipping.
Custom parts and equipment
Standard policies only cover a limited amount of aftermarket work. If you’ve added chrome, custom paint, saddlebags, exhaust, or other upgrades, custom parts and equipment coverage helps protect that investment up to a higher limit you choose.
Roadside and optional coverages
Depending on the carrier, you can add roadside assistance and towing, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, trip interruption, and coverage for your safety gear. We’ll walk you through which add-ons are worth it for how you ride.
What affects the cost, and how to pay less
Riders searching for affordable coverage usually want to know two things: what drives the price, and how to bring it down. Both come down to a handful of factors.
Your premium is shaped by the type and engine size of your bike, your riding and driving history, your age and experience, where you keep the bike, your annual mileage, and the coverage limits and deductibles you choose. A sport bike and a cruiser don’t rate the same, and neither do a new rider and a veteran with a clean record.
There are also real ways to lower the cost:
- Take a safety course. Many carriers offer a discount for completing a recognized motorcycle safety course.
- Bundle your policies. Insuring your bike alongside your auto or home may qualify you for a multi-policy discount.
- Use winter storage coverage. Colorado isn’t a year-round riding state for most people, and some carriers offer a reduced “lay-up” rate for the months your bike is stored and off the road.
- Choose your deductible with intent. A higher deductible usually lowers your premium, as long as it’s an amount you could comfortably cover.
Because we shop multiple carriers, we can line these up for you and find the combination that fits your budget.
Custom, classic, and chopper coverage
Custom and classic bikes need coverage that reflects what they’re actually worth. A standard policy may value a heavily customized or vintage motorcycle at ordinary market value, which can fall well short of what you’ve put into it.
For these bikes, we can look at agreed value coverage, where you and the carrier settle on the bike’s value up front, along with higher custom parts limits. If you ride a chopper, a restored classic, or a one-off build, tell us, and we’ll quote it accordingly.
Bikes this coverage is written for
Motorcycle coverage is generally written for street-legal bikes, including:
- Cruisers and baggers
- Sport bikes
- Touring motorcycles
- Standard and naked bikes
- Dual-sport bikes
- Choppers and custom builds
- Trikes

Frequently Asked Questions About Motorcycle Insurance in Western Colorado
Yes. A motorcycle is a motor vehicle, so Colorado requires liability coverage of at least 25/50/15, the same minimum as a car. That covers damage you cause to others. To protect your own bike and yourself, you’d add collision, comprehensive, and medical payments coverage.
It depends on your bike, your riding history, your age and experience, where you keep it, and the coverage you choose, so there’s no single price. As an independent agency, we compare carriers to find competitive coverage for your situation, and we can apply discounts like a safety course or bundling to bring the cost down.
Often, yes. Many riders store their bikes through the Colorado winter, and some carriers offer a reduced lay-up rate for the months it’s off the road. We can look for policies that offer this when we quote you.
Only up to a limited amount by default. If you’ve invested in custom paint, chrome, exhaust, or other upgrades, custom parts and equipment coverage raises that limit to protect your work. We’ll set it to match what you’ve actually added.
It can. Some policies offer coverage for safety apparel like your helmet and jacket, either built in or as an add-on, up to set limits. Tell us what your gear is worth and we’ll factor it in.
