Boat & Watercraft Insurance in Colorado

A day on the water is one of the best parts of a Colorado summer, right up until something goes wrong. Boat insurance helps protect your boat, your passengers, and you if there’s an accident, theft, or damage on the water or on the road to the ramp.

Bird Family Insurance helps boaters across the Western Slope and the rest of Colorado cover everything from fishing boats and pontoons to ski boats and personal watercraft. As an independent agency, we compare policies from multiple carriers for you, so you can match the right coverage to how and where you actually use your boat.

What boat insurance covers

At a glance: A typical boat policy can cover four things: physical damage to your boat and trailer, your liability to others, medical costs, and your gear on board. Limits and options vary by policy and carrier.

Boat insurance is built to handle the situations a standard auto or home policy isn’t designed for. Most policies are organized around a few core coverages.

Physical damage

This helps pay to repair or replace your boat, motor, and often the trailer after a covered loss such as a collision, storm, fire, or theft. Coverage can apply both on the water and while you’re towing to and from the lake.

Liability

If you’re responsible for an accident that injures someone else or damages their boat, dock, or property, liability coverage can help with the resulting legal and repair costs up to your policy limit. On a busy reservoir, this is the coverage that matters most.

Medical payments

This helps cover medical bills for you and your passengers after a boating accident, up to a set limit and regardless of fault. It’s designed to take care of injuries quickly without a liability dispute.

Personal effects

Many policies can extend to the gear you keep on board, such as fishing equipment, electronics, and safety equipment, up to certain limits. Depending on the carrier, you may also be able to add on-water towing, fuel-spill liability, and uninsured boater coverage.

Good to Know: Exact coverages, limits, and exclusions vary by policy and carrier. Bird Family Insurance can walk you through what a specific policy includes before you buy.

What We Can Insure

We can quote coverage for most recreational watercraft used on Colorado waters, including:

  • Fishing boats and bass boats
  • Pontoon boats
  • Ski and wakeboard boats
  • Runabouts and speedboats
  • Sailboats
  • Personal watercraft (Jet Skis, Sea-Doos, and other PWC)

If you’re not sure whether your boat qualifies, ask us and we’ll point you to the right policy.

Do You Need Boat Insurance in Colorado?

Colorado does not require boat insurance by law. It does, however, require you to register any motorized or sail-powered boat with Colorado Parks and Wildlife before operating on public water, and to carry an Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) stamp before launching. Registration runs annually, from January 1 through December 31.

Even though the state doesn’t mandate insurance, you may still need it. Many marinas require proof of liability coverage before they’ll rent you a slip, and most lenders require physical damage coverage on a financed boat until it’s paid off.

Good to Know: A standard homeowners or renters policy usually provides very limited coverage for boats, often only small, low-horsepower vessels. For most motorboats, a dedicated boat policy is what actually protects you.

Boating across the Western Slope

Western Colorado has no shortage of water. Boaters launch at Highline Lake near Fruita, Rifle Gap Reservoir, Vega Reservoir, and the lakes of the Grand Mesa, and many trailer farther out to Lake Powell for the season.

Wherever you put in, the right policy should match how you use the boat, how far you travel with it, and how long it sits in storage over the winter. We’ll help you build coverage around that rather than a one-size-fits-all quote.

Frequently Asked Questions About Boat Insurance in Western Colorado

Do you need boat insurance in Colorado?

Not by state law. Colorado requires you to register a motorized or sailpowered boat with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and to carry an ANS stamp, but it does not require insurance. That said, many marinas require proof of liability coverage to rent a slip, and lenders typically require physical damage coverage on a financed boat.

Does my homeowners or renters policy cover my boat?

Usually only in a very limited way. Many home policies include a small amount of coverage for low-horsepower boats, but it rarely extends to larger motorboats, full liability, or on-water risks. A dedicated boat policy is designed to cover those gaps, and we can show you the difference.

Are jet skis and personal watercraft covered?

Yes, personal watercraft like Jet Skis and Sea-Doos can be insured, though they’re often written on their own policy or as a specific addition rather than lumped in with a larger boat. We can quote PWC coverage on its own or alongside your boat.

Can I lower my premium during the off-season?

Often, yes. Some carriers offer reduced rates during the months your boat is in storage and off the water, sometimes called a lay-up period. We can look for policies that offer this when we compare your options.

Can I bundle boat insurance with my auto or home policy?

Frequently, yes. Many carriers offer a discount for holding more than one policy, so adding your boat to your existing coverage may lower your overall cost. We can quote it bundled and show you both ways.
